End Mill Regrinding: Stop Scrapping Your Profit Margin
Solid carbide no longer costs what shops assumed it would when they built their tooling budgets. In April 2026, Reuters reported that ammonium paratungstate, the tungsten intermediate, traded above $3,000 per metric ton unit in Rotterdam. The price has climbed more than 200 percent since the start of the year. End mill regrinding is the fastest way to pull real money back out of that squeeze.
The Carbide Math Has Changed
For years, many shops treated solid carbide end mills as consumables. They ran them until they were dull and dropped them into the scrap bin. That habit made sense when replacement tools were cheap and available. With China restricting tungsten exports and the United States operating no active commercial tungsten mines, neither condition holds anymore. Every worn end mill in your scrap bin is carbide you already paid for at yesterday’s prices.
What End Mill Regrinding Returns
The SME illustrates the potential savings with a simple example. In their example, a $50 end mill takes three regrinds at $25 each and delivers four total uses for $125. Purchasing four new end mills would cost $200. In this example, regrinding reduces tooling costs by approximately 38 percent.
