Meet James Higgs, one of our CNC Operators at GWS-FL, in Tavares, Florida. James has a long history with GWS Tool Group and brings a hard-working spirit.

James began his journey with GWS in 2006, dedicating nearly a decade to the company and forming a strong connection with its team and mission. After deciding to pursue other opportunities, he realized the unique culture and values of GWS were unmatched. Reflecting on his return, James shared, “It just felt like home,” a testament to the lasting bond he has with his coworkers at his facility and his passion for contributing to its success.

Before beginning his manufacturing career, James was a professional bowler! While searching for a fulfilling career path, his love for math and problem-solving led him to a friend’s suggestion to apply at GW Schultz. Just six months into the job, James knew he had found his calling. Today, he proudly describes himself as a “professional problem solver,” thriving on the dynamic challenges the industry presents—from technology and programming to application development.

In his current role, James is deeply involved in the entire process of manufacturing cutting tools. This includes setting up machines, ensuring minimal run-outs, perfecting cutting edges and geometries, and transforming designs into tangible products. Known for his extensive grinding wheel expertise, James is a go-to resource for questions about grinding wheels, along with speeds and feeds.

James finds immense fulfillment in his work—whether it’s helping colleagues improve their skills, overcoming complex setups, or tackling new challenges. He’s particularly proud of the opportunities for growth and innovation at GWS, as well as the company’s strong leadership, which he believes is guiding the team toward a bright future.

LIFE OUTSIDE OF GWS

Family is at the heart of James’ life. Growing up in a family of seven siblings, he and his wife now have six children of their own. A proud Florida native, James has spent 34 of the last 40 years living in Lake County, where he enjoys the sunshine and outdoor lifestyle.

Even though he was a professional bowler who played over 800 games and took 22 bowling balls with him everywhere, James doesn’t bowl much anymore. In fact, he’s only been bowling a handful of times since 2006. However, he is an active member at his local Bang Mu Thai martial arts gym. He likes the community and friendship he has built there over the years, and he says it helps to keep him young!

James loves to be at the beach or on a boat on the lake. He could honestly spend all of his free time outdoors! He also loves to cook – either using his smoker for barbeque or making multiple pans of his signature eggplant parmesan dish, hoping to get some before his family eats it all!
