A CNC Swiss screw machine shop specializing in components for the medical industry faced a significant challenge while producing a 2mm broken screw extractor for surgical applications. This specialized tool required internal threading within a narrow tube to extract damaged screws embedded in bone. The machining process was particularly complex due to the use of 440A stainless steel, a material known for its hardness and difficulty to cut.

Upon reviewing the initial challenge, it was clear that the standard tooling solutions being used were not sufficient for machining such a tough material with the required precision. GWS Tool Group introduced a custom internal thread mill specifically designed for the 440A stainless steel application. This new approach not only extended tool life dramatically—achieving over twice the expected parts per tool from 50 parts to 110 parts per tool—but also optimized cycle times, significantly reducing production costs.

The customer was so satisfied with the results that they are now collaborating with GWS on additional projects, exploring multi-flute thread mills and thread whirler inserts to further streamline their processes.
